Wags for Warriors Pairs Pets with Vets
Fundraiser at Bourbon Barrel to help provide companion animals to veterans of the armed forces
Thursday, Nov. 14
Mercyhurst assistant professor Alexander Regina Ph.D. has his plans come to fruition as he helps host the 2019 Wags for Warriors event, which allows veterans to adopt dogs.
"It goes without saying that these animals are so important to their mental well-being. There's nothing like the companionship of a dog," Regina said.
Regina gave his social media marketing class the task of promoting and hosting an event that benefits the community. The students have since taken to social media and community outreach programs to promote Wags for Warriors.
The event will be held at Bourbon Barrel with adoptable animals from the A.N.N.A Shelter there from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. The goal of the event is to raise money so veterans in the area are able to adopt their own dogs.
Mercyhurst student Stephany Oemzke has been visiting the Soldiers' and Sailors' home downtown and said the veterans are beyond excited for the possibility of having a furry companion.
Along with raffle prizes, live music, and drink specials with the purchase of a ticket, Bourbon Barrel is donating a certain portion of the profits off of drinks that evening to the cause.
Regina said he hopes to raise close to $5,000 which would cover 100 pet adoptions for veterans. The money will go toward the facility and adoption fees used to provide companion animals to veterans of the armed forces.
Tickets will be available at the door, but can also be purchased via Eventbrite. General admission is $5 and $15 for VIP tickets which includes a T-shirt and free raffle tickets. All tickers include free food and drink specials.
For those who are not able to make it to the event, there is a GoFundMe page where people can donate. – Chloe Forbes
