Erie County Sees 53 Deaths, 1,643 New COVID-19 Cases In One Week
272 new cases were reported today, along with 15 new deaths
On Wednesday, Dec. 9, the office of Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper reported 272 new positive cases of COVID-19, as well as 15 new deaths. This brings our cumulative total to 7,441 positive cases. There have been 42,911 negative tests in total, with 2,097 recorded this week, and 1,879 the previous week.
According to the county, there have been 1,643 new positive cases in the past week, with an average of nearly 235 cases being reported each day. There have been 100 or more new cases reported each day from Nov. 11 onward.
There have been 135 total Erie County deaths reported by the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS), with 53 deaths occurring in this week alone.
According to the PA Department of Health, there are 129 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, 68 adult patients in the ICU, and 15 patients on ventilators.
Erie County's cumulative case total has more than doubled in just over three weeks (since Nov. 17). The number of deaths has more than doubled in a little over two weeks. (since Nov. 20). This rate has recently increased dramatically, accelerated more than eight times compared to last week's totals.

State, Local, and National Statistics
Today, Pennsylvania saw 8,703 additional positive cases reported, for a total of 445,317.
So far, there have been 9,465 deaths statewide. 2,852,624 patients have tested negative to date.
In the last week, Pennsylvania saw 69,886 new positive cases, 119,970 negative tests (only one-third the amount cataloged last week), and 1,292 deaths – nearly double last week's total of 1,292 deaths, which had itself doubled from the previous week's total of 630.
According to the CDC, the US has a total of 15,040,175 total cases, with 3,739,540 new cases in the last seven days (2,325,387 last week and 1,198,099 the week prior) and 217,046 in the last 24 hours.
The total number of deaths in the US is 285,351, with 15,588 reported in the last week and 2,566 in the last 24 hours.
As for updates in our nearby counties, Crawford County has 2,731 positive cases (up 605 this week), with 36 deaths (up 12 this week).
McKean County has 894 positive cases (up 369) and five deaths (up one).
Venango County has 1,416positive cases (up 366) and 12 deaths (up three this week).
Warren County has 630 total positive cases (up 297), and two death (up one).
Ashtabula County's cumulative total is 3,066 positive cases (up 374 this week) and 57 deaths (up three this week).
Chautauqua County has a cumulative total of 2,075 positive cases (up 400*) and 21 deaths (up two this week*).
